The Murder of Ben Pettigrew

The Murder of Ben Pettigrew
by Leon F. Litwack

In 1912 near Savannah, Tennessee "white tenants objected to blacks operating successfully on land they owned. Ben Pettigrew, accompanied by his two young daughters, was driving a load of cotton from his farm to town. Several miles from his place, four white men appeared on the road, shot the black farmer to death as he sat in the seat of his wagon, and dragged his two daughters from the top of the load and hanged them from a nearby tree. While their bodies dangled from a limb, the mob drove the wagon loaded with cotton under them and set fire to it. The message sent to enterprising black farmers in the region could not have been clearer...The total effect of white terrorism and intimidation was to discourage blacks from accumulating enough to arouse white resentment, while forcing the more enterprising to abandon their homes and occupations and leave the county without any protection or any compensation for their property.

Bibliographical Note: Leon F.

Liberia: A Black American Perspective
Those who are interested in West African affairs cannot get an accurate grasp without considering Black America's contribution to modern state building in that region of Africa. Baruti M. Kamau, an African American, in an unfinished book entitled "My Disquisition on the Liberian Political Phenomenon" that was initiated in 1995 writes: "The purpose of my disquisition on the Liberian Political Phenomenon is to trace the origins of the Liberian civil war and explain why Liberia was able to practice a pseudo-democracy with one party rule for more than a century without succumbing to military coup or civil war until relatively recent in their history." Mr. Kamau goes further early in his disquisition to demonstrate that Black Americans who were second and third generations descended from Black African slaves were instrumental in establishing the seeds to a modern democracy in Africa, specifically Liberia, prior to the European colonization of Africa.

An Analysis of Afro-American State Building in West Africa written by Baruti M.

One-way ticket to Mars?

Humans could be walking on Mars within the next couple decades, for only a fraction of the cost the United States has already budgeted for space exploration. How? The answer is simple, say a pair of Mars researchers: Give the explorers a one-way ticket. The most costly and tricky part of any manned space mission is providing life-support for its human crew: food, oxygen, and protection from radiation and other hazards of space travel. On a human mission to Mars, most of the cost – some 80 percent of it – would involve returning the crew to Earth, say Dirk Schulze-Makuch and Paul Davies in the October-November issue of the Journal of Cosmology. Rather than quintuple the cost, those funds could go toward building a permanent settlement, the two scientists argue.

Source: CSMonitor.com

Robert Charles (1865?-1900)

Robert Charles (1865?-1900)
An African-American National Hero

Robert Charles (1865-1900) was born in Copiah county, Mississippi either during the Civil War or immediately afterwards. Although his parents were sharecroppers and former slaves, it is not known how Charles managed to acquire elementary reading and writing skills. However, it is known that he left Copiah county, Mississippi for the city of New Orleans in search of a better life.

Robert Charles was a Black American day laborer. Among his peers, he was known for promoting emigration to Liberia, West Africa. During that time, many progressive Black Americans viewed emigration to Africa as an intelligent solution to the hostile, and often repressive, racial environment they were forced to live with. After engaging in a day of back-breaking work, Charles found time to sell copies of the Voice of Missions, a newspaper owned by the African Methodist Episcopal Church and edited by Bishop Turner.

Charles was all too aware of the racial injustices inflicted upon his people. As a member of the first generation of Black Americans born into freedom, Charles was also willing to challenge the restrictions put upon his freedom by White Southerners. The spring 1899 torture and burning death of a Black man named Sam Hose by a mob of White people outside of Atlanta, Georgia really infuriated Charles. This was actually the only time when friends and associates ever heard Charles express disappointment with and (show) a candid mistrust of Whites racially and American justice generally.

On one hot summer day in New Orleans (July 24, 1900) Robert Charles and his friend Leonard Pierce were sitting on the back steps of Charles' girlfriend (Virginia Banks) employer's house awaiting her return. Neighbors called the police complaining that two unknown Negroes were loitering in the neighborhood. Three police officers arrived: An Officer Mora, Sergeant Aucoin and Officer Cantrelle. Less than three minutes after their arrival, and without a warrant, the officers attempted to arrest the two men. When Charles questioned Officer Mora's authority to exact an arrest without a warrant, Mora attacked Charles with a billet. Charles responded by resisting Officer Mora's assault and drawing his gun. A duel ensued between the two. Officer Mora got the worse of the duel and collapsed immediately. Charles escaped with a gun shot wound to his thigh. Leonard Pierce was arrested by Officer Cantrelle and taken into custody. Sergeant Aucoin called for reinforcement and the largest manhunt in Louisiana's history followed.

Editor's Note: Written by Baruti M. Kamau on September 3, 2006 @ 5:43 A.M. for The Barutiwa Daily Times. Part II of this biographical sketch is in progress
